Asthma Friendly Schools Program

In 2000, the Asthma Friendly Schools (AFS) program was funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing as a national initiative at all primary and secondary schools across Australia.

The aim of the program is to improve the quality of life, health outcomes and well being for school children with asthma.

An Asthma Friendly School adopts the AFS program strategies to support the whole school community in understanding and managing asthma. For a school to gain Asthma Friendly status they need to fulfill the program’s 8 essential criteria.

Currently, 86% of Australian schools are Registered in the AFS program and 44% of Australian schools are Recognised as Asthma Friendly

AFS is run by the Asthma Foundation of SA.
