Supporting schools, governing councils and state education through training, advice and advocacy
The Teachers Registration Board is a Statutory Authority which operates under the auspices of the Education Minister.
It’s object is to establish and maintain a teacher registration system and professional standards for teachers, to ensure that members are competent educators and fit and proper persons to have children in their care.
All South Australian teachers must be licensed by the Teachers Registration Board to teach in public or independent schools.
The board meets twelve times per calendar year and is comprised of members of the SA community; primarily teachers and members of the SA branch of the teacher’s union.
Since the Rann Government’s review in 2004, there has not been a public school parent sit on the board.
In 2008, a parent representative from SAASSO was appointed a ‘deputy’ member of the board. Apart from an induction, this parent representative only attends a meeting if the representative from Catholic sector is unavailable.
To date, the SAASSO parent representative has not been invited to any meetings and receives no briefing materials on any current business of the board.
