Supporting schools, governing councils and state education through training, advice and advocacy
DECS is changing the way school principals are selected.
The current ‘Merit Selection Policy and Procedures’ (below) were developed in 1997 - before Local Governance.
Choosing the right principal is the most important decision for a school. It is also the only appointment in which the school community, through the Governing Council has any say.
‘A White Paper’ has been written by Bill Cossey proposing changes to the current system, and makes eight key recommendations.
The document focuses on the following areas:
• The impending retirement of a significant number of principals
• Doubling principal tenure to 10 years
• Making the process less rigorous for DECS
• Ensuring Governing Councils have no say in extending principal contracts
The White Paper, as well as current documents that are used as a resource for selecting public school principals can be downloaded below.
A feedback form is also available for you below to comment on any of the proposed changes.
