Supporting schools, governing councils and state education through training, advice and advocacy
The first proposed amendment submitted by the Government is the reform of the SSABSA Act.
In January, the Government released a proposal for sweeping changes to the Act. Of particular interest to parents are changes to the way the SSABSA Board is chosen and the power of the Minister to direct the Board.
Currently, the SSABSA Board is comprised of representatives of all key education stakeholders in South Australia, including SAASSO. We nominate a member to the to ensure that the voice of parents is heard on this most vital Board.
The Government’s proposal would take this right from us (and you) and leave the decision of who will be on the Board entirely in the hands of the Minister.
Listed here, are:
• The SSABSA Act as it currently stands
• The Government’s proposed changes to the Act
• SAASSO’s submission on these proposed changes.
Sadly, our concerns were ignored….
As part of the State Government’s efforts to reshape senior secondary education and increase student retention in South Australia, the compulsory education age will be increased to 17 from January 1 2009.
