SchoolKids Bonus

In the 2012 Budget, the Australian Government announced that the Education Tax Refund (ETR) would be replaced by a new payment scheme called the Schoolkids Bonus.

Starting from 1 January 2013, the SchoolKids Bonus intended to help 1.3 million Australian families with children at school pay for expenses such as uniforms, books, school excursions, stationery and other costs like music lessons and sports registration fees.

Eligible families are paid the bonus automatically (no need to claim or keep receipts) in January and July.

Legislation has now passed to end the Schoolkids Bonus payments at the end of 2016 – final payments will be made in July 2016.

As of January 1 2015, an income test applies to the Bonus. Eligible families and young people with an adjusted taxable income of $100,000 or less will receive the payments.

Each year, families will receive:

  • $422 for each child in primary school (two instalments of $211) and
  • $842 for each child in high school (two instalments of $421).
