School Transparency & Reporting

School Transparency & Reporting
As of January 28th 2010, parents are now be able to access information about any school across Australia through one website.

The controversial 'My School' website includes a profile page for each school and include data such as;
  • School NAPLAN test results
  • A short description of the school and a link to the school's website
  • Number of students and attendance rates
  • School Index of Community Socio-Educational Advantage (ICSEA) value
  • A list of up to 20 schools located nearest to the school selected

Not all of the information planned for publication will be accessible this year - extra data will be added as it becomes available.

Education ministers agree that school income information is to be published in the next website update.

Transparent reporting of school results was welcomed by parents with 9 million hits on the 1st day.

Problems within schools cannot be fixed, if they are hidden. All parents have to decide where to send their children, and this should be decided on fact and not gossip or rumour.

SAASSO supports this positive move which will help identify and target needs of poor performing schools - allowing the evaluation of a school’s gain, growth, performance, and improvements over time.

SAASSO calls for transparency - 2007

This Federal Government initiative over-rules the previously existing arrangement the Education Department has with the local branch of the teacher's union, not to release information to South Australia’s parents - an arrangement the Rann Government had left in place.

In 2007, SAASSO spoke out when the union threatened 'widespread industrial action, especially in primary schools', if the Education Department released data on reading, writing and numeracy. This followed a decision earlier that year by the Rann Government to prohibit the release of school Year 12 results.
